Role of Oncology In Treatment of Types of Pet Cancer

Cancer is the most dreadful disease and Pet Cancer is no different from human cancer. It can affect anywhere in the body of your favorite pet and may even led to death, if untreated for long time. It is the result of the advancement in medical science that the life expectancy of both humans and animals, especially pets, has increased considerably. Such increase in life expectancy has also brought the potential hazards of life and its exposure to diseases, especially cancer. It occurs when the body’s immune system cannot control the rapid cell division and replicating at an alarming rate. These cells then accumulate in specific places forming tumors which later on cause cancer.

The Skin Cancer

It is found that most tumors that are found in pets are skin tumors and a majority of these skin tumors are due to mast cell tumors. Skin tumors are very common disease found in older dogs and are comparatively less found in cats. The skin tumors that are found in cats are mostly malignant but those which are found in dogs are benign in nature. It is for the vet to determine which skin tumor is malignant. Another common Pet Cancer is mammary gland or breast cancer and most of them are malignant. The best way to prevent your pet from getting affected with such disease is by spaying it before it reaches twelve months of age.

Neoplasia And Lymphoma

Neoplasia is a common type of Pet Cancer which is very common among dogs and less found in cats and is found in the mouth. The signs of such disease are seen in the gums combined with bleeding from mouth and nose, bad odor and difficulty in eating and breathing and swellings in face. It is better to consult a doctor so that it does not turn malignant and treatment can be started early. Whereas Lymphoma is a common form ofNeoplasia which are found in both dogs and cats. It is caused due to the enlargement of one or multiple lymph nodes and is a result of a contagious leukemia virus in felines.

Testicular And Other Tumors

There are some other types of tumors like testicular tumors which are more common in dogs than in cats. Tumors which are inside the abdomen of the pet are also very common but it is difficult to diagnose such tumors early apart from the signs that it gives with abdominal swellings and rapid loss in weight. You may also find tumors in bones which become cancer quickly as it spreads fast. It is most often seen in larger dogs and which are older than seven years and is found rarely in cats.

The Role of Oncology

Oncology plays an important role in the treatment of Pet Cancer just like it does in the case of cancer treatment in humans. Humans and dogs are only two natural species which develop prostate cancers. Just like in humans, breast cancer can spread and affect bones of the dog and the osteosarcoma disease is the same one which affects teenagers. Based on these similarities, vet cancer research benefits cancer treatment in humans as well.Comparative oncology program uses these cancers occurring in animals to understand and treat human cancers in a better way.
